Jacques and Gwen had thought to make an illustrated Bible and in 1913 Eric Gill joined the project with enthusiasm, having just converted to Catholicism. But they couldn't agree as to which Bible it should be - Catholic or Protestant - and so the project slipped away.

Both Gwen and Jacques were painting with great intensity - Gwen made a three-foot-tall oil painting called Two Women a reworking of her wood-engraving The Visitation..
